Expectations

Well even though high school is jsut starting I think I have a good idea on what I'm expecting to do and learn, not from just class but high school sll together. And I think I have some ideas from siblings and friends that have been through high school and have experiences. I expect for myself to not only pass high school and get good grades but complete all of the classes that need to be completed for a 4 year college and I would also like to go to law school so my grades would have to stay A's and B's.
I expect to learn the social part of life. Consisting of love, drama, and actual friends. I know drama will happen and boys will come along and I will have to deal with it, but its something I already expected and actually want to deal with to learn from my mistakes. I also don't want to do drugs, and not drink. Which who knows could happen because of pure pressure or just being dumb. I expect to gain trust from my friends and peers and know how to deal with me problems, and learn class doesn't revolve around you when you get an assignment it's your job to do it.

Poetry Out Loud

My poem is Mother to Son by Langston Hughes. I chose to resite this poem because I understand the meaning of it and it makes sense to me. I think this poem has alot of meaning and is a good metaphor to compare to life. I related to this poem because it shows never to give up on life. Also because my parents life weren't perfect so because of what I've seen I need to keep going.

To be prepared for this Class competition I just kept resiting the poem to memorize and pictures the objects it says so I can remember. I don't think I will win the class competition. I think it may be possible to get in top ten because I can memorize mine and it is easy to emphasize. My poem had alot of similar words that I can remember easily. I think my poem fit me well.

The Road Not Taken

The poem "the road not taken" has a lot of meaning to it. The road not taken looks perfect and swept, but the reason for that is because no one takes it. The character who does not know which one to take is unique. In The Road not taken it says "I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference." No one will ever know which one is better unless someone tries. In stopping by the woods on a snowy evening it says "he will not see me stopping here" relates to this because no ever ever took that path and now no one will know. He wanted to take the road not taken because it could lead him somewhere better than the road taken.
I chose this poem because I understand what the meaning of it and can relate to what he is thinking. Is college the right way to go or is trying something new going to possibly take you somewhere else and being unique. I think is very important for anyone to read because this may lead people to thinking outside the box instead of following everyone elses foot steps. I relate to this because I don't want to just go get all A's and go to a 4 year college and get a job. I want to do something interesting and fun that is a challenge, so sometimes you need to take a chance and go for the non chosen.

Movie

The court case with Mayella and Tom was similar and different in many ways. In the movie Scout, Dill, and Jem sit in the blacony with Reverend Sykes, which I pictured the balcony the same as the book. When Mayella spoke in the movie she seemed more nervous and quit than in the book. During Atticus talking to Mayella in the book she seemed more mean than the movie. She also seemed to not have as many reasons to back herself up and was more nervous in the movie.
Atticus seemed to defend Tom very well in the movie as he did in the book, which I pictured the same thing in both. Tom didn't talk in the movie which I noticed in the book. Even though Bob was mean in the book, he seemed drunk or very mean in person as if he didn't care about any of the trial and jsut wanted to be mean to Atticus. In the movie it said that the black people moved for Jem, Dill, and Scout but in the movie they were just standing so I don't think it was as dramatic as the book explained. Over all with the movie and the book I saw alot of the things that I pictured.

Impact on my life.. haha

Through out this whole book a lot has gone on and all of the characters had lessons learned and even I did just reading the book. To kill a mockingbird taught me a lot about racism and the difference in white and black people in Maycomb. Even though there are people that are white that like black people in Maycomb, doesn't mean a black person can always win with a white person on there side. When Tom got shot 17 times and killed was not fair and shows how cruel the people in Maycomb were. 

Personally I don't think I have changed because I haven't had a racism problem with my friends since we read the book and there is not a lot of racism around me. When it says "why, if we followed our feelings all the time we'd be like cats chasin' their tails" you can't always do what you want because there is blocks in the way of life and you have to look around at your peers. I've learned more about my surroundings now going into high school. I'm also more aware and use those examples in an any day situation.

Life Lesson

Scout seems to always be draggin around Jem, Dill and Atticus and doesn't really have the feminine life that she should have. Where they live there is alot of racism. Scouts family is not racist and thats proved by Calpurnia who is like a mother not a slave. With Scouts father being a lawyer, that is her lifestyle and she learns more than any normal kid when she says "she didn't see us but it was all over town this morning that we were in the colored balcony" because she knew they were specifically for them. I've never been in the same situation because I live with girls only amd racism isnt a huge deal around me, but I've know of friends who deal with racism and it was something that is a bid deal and hard to deal with when there are Racist people out there.

With all of the court and trials with Tom Robinson Scout has been getting all of the knowledge from her father who is being Toms lawyer for his case. Since Scout has been raised around racism and her dad trys to teach that its not okay, I think she is learning the life lessons of your race. She is learing that your color can make a big affect on your life. Scout is being taught what is and isn't okay with her Aunt Alexandra who makes sure she says the right things. This is important because Racism is everywhere and she can be able to follow in Atticus's shoes and try and stop Racism.

Themes

Racism was a big part of the last few chapters and the way they show it. Now in reality and in books it always says how White people are better than Black people for some reason even though there are black people that do have more money and are happier than White people. In the last 3 chapters it showed that most of the White people in there ton don't like Black people but use them like there slaves.
Atticus is one of the few who seem to stand up for the black people. Scout said the "N" word and was told not to say it. Even though everyone else said it her dad was sticking up for a black person and probably didn't want his daughter saying those things. And when Mayella told Tom she would give him a nickel if he helped her shows that they think of Black people as Slaves. In court the people seemed to use the term "nigger" which is a mean way of saying black people which told everyone they didn't like them infront of Tom Robinson.

Atticus

Atticus is a good and protective parent but he is old so he isn't a fun and active parent. He gives the kids presents that they can play with without him. When Scout wanted to know what certain words meant Atticus wanted to make it clear to tell the kids what that stuff meant like when he said" when they ask what something is tell them!" so the kids knew what words were okay and what weren't so they learn from it. I think Scout was confused because she was being told that she shouldn't know and should know from different people, one being her father. It shows that Atticus knows what he is doing as a parent and wants to raise his kids right. He was teaching about the difference in white and black people because he was defending a black person and wants the kids to know the conflict.
Atticus is way different from my parents because my parents dont just read and stay inside. There more involved and young and active. But there also similar because my mom tells me what certain words mean so I'm aware and know what is not okay to say. No, I wouldn't want a father like Atticus because I think he is just boring and not as interested in his kids life.

Changin Perceptions of Boo Radley

When Jem was crying and his pants were mysteriously sewn and folded it made me think that Boo was a nice man he just seemed weird and lonely and Jem just started to feel bad. The consistent feelings they would get being around his house weren't good feelings but I think Boo could be a nice man if he were to come out and talk to people.
With the pants sewn and folded nicely he could know whats going on and he just wanted to help. Miss. Maudie says " you know the story as well as I do", this showed that Boo never told people why he was always by himself in his house because everyone wondered about him.

Boo Radley

Nobody likes Boo Radley because he seems weird and creepy but I think he might just be lonely and curious about all the kids. He hasn't been out and about to see what everything is like so he is just bored and alone which seems kind of creepy but I kind of feel bad for him, haha. He has a weird impression when it says "looks like he'd just stick his head out the door" thinking hes a creeper.
I'd mostly be like Scout because she doesn't really know Mr. Radley to see how he really is, she just sees the creepy weird side of him and makes a first impression which I would probably do too.

Something I have enjoyed in English

So far I have enjoyed talking about Susie because she seems pretty cool . I wish Susie was real because yes, she would be my best friend, and Susie would have more friends that Mrs. Gilman thinks. I enjoy making up stories so I think Susie should be made into a classroom doll. I also think we should have a classroom project and make a book about Susie. Even though Susie isn't really I think she brings some enjoyment to our classroom
